Artist on the Rise: Alexa Chloe

Posted in Random on December 17, 2009 by Brian Jarvis

I wanted to take a minute and talk about an amazing photographer and graphic designer, who continually amazes me at the moments she creates and captures in one click.

I’ve known Alexa for three years now and I can proudly call her one of my closest friends. We’ve been through a lot together in the last three years. One of the main things we have talked through and argued through is what she wants to do with her life.

I truly believe that God has called her to do some kind career in media. Whether it’s graphic design, photography, or a mix of both. Nothing is more clear than the fact that she has an incredible eye and creative mind.

If your interested in having incredible moments in your life captured to their fullest potential, you need to hire Alexa Chloe. She’s legit no lie! Here are just a few of the pictures she’s done…

Posted in Random on September 12, 2009 by Brian Jarvis

SN5M5079So.. I update this blog about once a month it seems.. which is ok with me I suppose.. I mean.. who honestly has enough time in a day (especially in ministry!! haha) to update a blog everyday! Anyways, I thought I would just update on what’s been going on at Northwood Student Ministry.

It was an awesome summer with NSM.. probably the best since I’ve been here. I feel extremely privileged to be apart of this team. We’ve fought and debated issue over and over with each other.. but the outcome of what God has used us to do makes it all worth it! VELOCITY was a tremendous success and with this upcoming school year already off to a great start. I can’t wait to see what God does in this student ministry!

Here are a few pics that were taken a few weeks ago.. just to give you a visual of whats been going on! Enjoy and take care! Until next time!

ALSO!! Soon we will be creating a Northwood Church worship blog to update you on the worship record we are working on and to give you access to any additional information about the music ministry at our Church! take care!!

The Element’s NEW new look!

Posted in Music, Random on May 21, 2009 by Brian Jarvis

So, its been over a month since my last post, this is due mainly because I haven’t really been feeling very bloggish you could say, but the last post I posted was about the new look of The Element, which is our Wednesday night environment for middle school and high school students. This new post is also about another makeover we gave to this environment.. Here’s the story…….

Well, Wednesday morning rolls around, and it is another EARLY 6 am prayer… to our surprise… our BRAND NEW (really expensive) projector isn’t working!! so.. that brought a slight issue for NSM (Northwood Student Ministry) because we use video and media to run our entire service!

To make the story shorter… Phillip (Student Pastor aka “the boss”) and I put our creative minds together and this is our outcome!!! It’s just another example of how God can turn bad situations into really cool ideas and creative explosions!!

The NEW look of the The Element!

So this past Wednesday our Staff had a vision for the new look of The Element which is our combined middle school and high school environment on Wednesday nights.. This is what it looks like when our vision and creativity becomes reality!! The pics aren’t that great but you can get the idea! I’ll put better ones up later! It was an awesome night!!!

More and more every week I feel our staff at Northwood Student Ministry is growing stronger every week. I truly feel privileged to work with these guys and love being able to say that they are just as much fellow employees and boss as my friends.

So all of this in mind.. I walk into the office after a Church Staff lunch at Wild Wings (delicious!!)  and I’m given this trendy watch! not only is it very “Elemental” looking (one of our environments is called The Element) but all of the guys have one! So not only do the staff all have matching watches now.. but this is actually my very first watch that I can recall owning!  I love these guys!

Humility- Part 1

Posted in Random on January 13, 2009 by Brian Jarvis

So, obviously it’s been awhile since I’ve blogged about anything. This is due in part mostly because I’ve been kind of in a mental “rut” you could say. But I’ve finally refocused myself and feel that I can once again share my vast amount of wisdom and profound thoughts with the world (YEAH RIGHT!)

This entry is entitled Humility – Part 1, because I am currently reading a book called… you guest it, Humility: True Greatness by C. J. Mahaney. Phillip (youth pastor/boss man) gave the Northwood Student Ministry Staff this book to read as our quarterly staff read and I am embarrassed to say that I am just now starting it. But wow! is it rockin’ my world right now!! I thought I would just take a few minutes sharing what I have already taken from this awesome book.

For starters…. Nothing escapes God’s notice and He aware of ALL things, “God is decisively drawn to humility. The person who is humble is the one who draws God’s attention, and in this sense, drawing His attention means also attracting His grace – His unmerited kindness.” So maybe right now your saying… duh Brian, that’s text book bible knowledge, but allow me to continue…. “Humility is honestly assessing ourselves in light of God’s holiness and our sinfulness.” So with this in mind, C. J. asks some questions.. “When it comes to the values we live by, what will others say about us one day? Will they testify that humility characterized our lives?”

Now if i was to assess myself, I would probably say that I am pretty humble (oxymoron!! HA HA) But when I think about my actions at times (even unintentional jokes and actions) I would say that I probably at times don’t portray a humble spirit enough.

This is a hard thing to admit, but God’s working in me.. It’s not that I truly believe that I am God’s gift to the world, but I jokingly will make cocky remarks, which to someone who doesn’t know me, would think I was an arrogant jerk.. But anyways… moving on!

This was the last quote I pulled from the first chapter which is a great place to end this entry.. “Our motivation for rooting out pride must go beyond a knowledge of its pitfalls and perils. Our pursuit should be driven by the amazing promise that humility holds out to us: God gives grace to the humble!! In all your ventures, are you aware of your need for God’s grace to give your efforts lasting value?”

This is book is really helping me evaluate how I believe others see me. As I continue reading this book, I’ll continue to add little epiphanies I acquire and post them so that you too can be enlightened! God bless and stay HUMBLE!!!!
